Village Life

There is likely to be those "WHAT", "WHERE", "WHY", "WHEN" and "HOW" type of questions that you may have about life in our parish.

Hopefully, those questions will be answered here.  If you can't find the answer you're looking for, please message us via the contact us page and we'll do our best to help (and we'll add your query to this page to help other residents).

  1. When is the rubbish collected? Non-recyclable waste (black bags), fortnightly on a Wednesday morning; recycling and food waste, every Friday morning; garden fortnightly on a Friday morning (same week as the black bags).  The Torridge District Council collection page will have details for your individual address.

  2. Where is the postbox? This is located in the village "square" near to the ex-phone box (which is now the book exchange).

  3. Is there a defibrillator in the village? Yes, there is. It is located in the entrance foyer at the Village Hall.

  4. Where does the weekly bus pick up from? The Taw & Torridge 322 service collects passengers from the village square once a week on a Tuesday morning. Visit the Taw & Torridge website for details.

  5. Where does the school bus collect from? Taw & Torridge collects school children who attend Bluecoats Primary School and Great Torrington School from the bus shelter situated in the village hall car park.

  6. Where are the dog waste bins located in the village? There are two dog waste bins in the parish. One is located by the salt grit bin coming into the village from the B3232 (Torrington road) by the junction of Moor Lane, the other is located in the Village Hall car park.  Letting a dog foul and not cleaning up afterwards is a CRIMINAL OFFENCE. See the Torridge District Council link to report any mess found (photographic evidence is required).

  7. Is there a pub in the village? We don't have a pub, but our Village Bar is open every Saturday evening.

  8. Is there a village shop/post office? Unfortunately not. All high street supermarkets deliver to the parish and our regular postman can possibly take any mail that is need to be posted (by individual arrangement).

  9. What is there for the children of the village to do? There is a play park to the rear of the village hall, together with the playing field behind the houses at Church Park.  There is also the opportunity of a Youth Group to be held on alternative Fridays in the village hall for children of all ages to join in with activities.

  10. Are there any regular clubs or activities that take place in the village? Yes there is! We have skittles, badminton, short mat bowls and bingo. The brief details are found on the Village Hall page with links to each individual club.

  11. What community events take place during the year? Regular events in the village include the Spring Fayre, Summer Fetes, Cider Walk, Halloween parties, Christmas Fayre to name but a few. Keep an eye on the calendar or events posters together with following the various social media platforms.

  12. Air Ambulance landing location. Together with having a defibrillator located at the village hall, we are able to fascilitate the Air Ambulance should the need arise.  Controlled lighting is located in the playing field (behind the village hall) and is ideally placed for the helicopter to land. It is IMPORTANT that anyone using the goal posts in the field return them to the perimeter of the field. Click the map of the field and the details needed.

  13. Road works. Any planned (or unplanned) road works in the parish will undoubtedly cause problems travelling out the parish. There is a separate page on this website that has the latest works listed.
